You underestimate the pervasiveness of spam bots. Skynet won’t need to launch nukes to destroy the world, they’ll just flood the interwebs with gelatinous meat products!

Discord is frustrating. I hear bleap after bleap and have no idea which of the hundreds of folders are receiving posts.

yeah, this is why i've turned the notification sounds off altogether - you can do that in the settings. :) couldn't even bear to have discord open until i figured that out.

there are still visual indicators. you see a white dot next to discord servers with new messages, and channels within discord servers that have new messages have a dot and white text instead of grey text (at least in the dark theme) too. you can even mute servers and channels that you aren't as interested in as others.

For whatever reason, new servers always seem to have notifications set to "every time someone posts" which might be what Sai is experiencing. If that's happening, what you need to do is go to the Notification Settings for the server and tell it you only want those for "@ mentions". That makes sure you only get those bleeps if someone is specifically talking to you (like how people quote others here on the forums, in a way).
