When I see that kinda thing I always like to think the growth "effect" reacts slower to non-living objects then to living ones.
So they'll start to outgrow the clothes and tear them up a bit, but then the clothes will just start growing themself and keep from being totally destroyed.
That or non-living material only grows 75-80% of what living material does.
