None of the tentacles take any kind of alternate form unless specifically willed to by either Mary or the Body; the default behavior would be to seek out Mary or her Lair as soon as possible, bypassing any other instincts. The Flesh is very monarchical in that way; while it could probably infect and/or consume hosts much faster if it spread out virus-like, it focuses instead on one host somewhat arbitrarily appointed as "the one".
