More like science explains things while religion excuses them. The excuse is that it is all the plan of a god(s), and that it will all work out in the end.

Don't do this. Let him throw the tantrum. A hypothetical second encounter might bring up that his religion was perfectly willing to believe that the earth was flat too (the christian bible describes the earth as hanging in space (good start) supported on pillars (er...) and having corners (hrm)). Also if a shifting perspective bothers him so much ask him what his church thinks of divorce, because Jesus was pretty clear on that topic.
