Pseudoclever, you have just NAILED my beliefs. All my main conclusions about "why" after years of arduous logical reasoning are pretty much summed up in your last post.

Genesis as an allegory actual works, too. If you use general relativity's time dilation and apply it to the minuscule size the universe started as at the Big Bang -universe includes both time and space- then 1 day equaling several billion years is not so much off. If I were a physicist, I'd crunch the numbers. I'm not, but I have read a book that crunched them for me and it comes pretty damn close and makes a whole lot of sense.

As for using the humans as creators belief as an argument for why we should feel free to tamper with the genetic code, well, I'd say the response could easily be that while, yes, we are meant to be creators we are too young and inexperienced at it right now, and should not mess with things we don't yet really understand. It's like a 10 year old who has just mastered Legos trying to build real apartment building. Although, he might still be able to point out some basic structural flaws and even know how to fix them....
