Fortunately, under most circumstances authors are under no compulsion to make their characters realistic. It's far, far more important to make them
believeable.
Realisim makes for easy believeability, of course, but it's not the only way to achieve it. Remember, the goal is to make it easy for the reader to react to the story on the story's terms.
