Funny. When I read it, I celebrate every time they don't figure it out.

But even if I look at it as the characters would, I don't think it's "blatantly obvious". Sure, if it happened to me, I'd start noticing every strange new chemical I was in contact with, but I can suspend my disbelief: the doctor told them that water is the cause, citing a similar recent case. They have no reason to suspect he's wrong, and that the garden chemicals are in fact responsible.
