Re: The dictaphone (BE/GTS/...)

The whole writing.com issue is getting pretty heated. Like I said in an earlier post, until they got super aggressive i was 100% ready to throw down money for a basic membership. I wanted to support such a wonderful community of people coming together to write good fanfictions and great stories like this one.

Then the dark times came upon us.

One hand - I agree, sites and forums need to make money and sadly the best revenue for any website is to lend out their space for advertisements and the such. This is a sad truth we have to face in our consumerist society. I'm sure if there were other ways to generate a steady flow of income doing what you love on the internet things would change but as it stands this is sadly the best way to go about it.

The other hand - Placement, content, and how intrusive your ads are lead to programs being implemented like Adblock and special scripts being written to block the worst of them. Had the advertisements been less raunchy and less intrusive on the experience (I even sent the moderator pictures of the speedo ad scrolling WITH my story) im 100% certain there would be alot less blocking and more support. However you can still get support for your site and not advertise the worst of humanity. I dont mind the airline ads. I dont mind the college ads. I do hate the freaking ads that "Juicyads" put up and they make me sick to my stomach.

Right now the moderator of the forums and the site is banking on "hey, i was here 1st. I got the website address. I own this site. Don't like it, go somewhere else...oh wait there IS nowhere else. Ha ha ha."

He's right at this point in time there IS nowhere else to go. However that wont remain a fact forever. Soon new sites will pop up, and hopefully more community friendly like how Writing.com was in the beginning. Hopefully we'll see our favorite stories migrate and continue over there. If there are ads maybe they will be less raunchy and intrusive. We can only hope that the writers version of Dailymotion pops up to challenge this youtube.
