Re: "Growing up Together" - Story (tags inside) Part 7 added 5/25!
Ok, posting up the next TWO parts up tonight. If only because a handful of new characters are introduced. All of whom are possible allies to Kirsten, as she's gonna need as many as she can find. So, with out further ado, here we go:
"Day 11"
Greg HATED waiting. It seemed like hours since he made the phone call to Sarah. As physician she was the most logical choice to help figure out this problem for Kirsten. He shook his head sadly. Poor girl. She had asked somberly if he’d wait for the good Doctor at the cave’s entrance. He agreed because he had his suspicions as to why.
Grief and acceptance. Now that she had time to calm down, some of the recently suppressed emotions had begun to take over. For all they knew, her former life had now come to an end. Even if they could figure out what had happened to her and why, she was still a giant. They had no idea if this thing was temporary or a permanent change. Plus there would be a slew of a whole new batch of practical problems, not at the least being how she would feed herself. She would need clothes, because as a girl of fashion she wouldn’t be able to survive on a makeshift bikini outfit forever.
If she was going to stay like this, how would her friends or her employees think of her? Greg could only imagine what must be going through her mind right now, or how she’s coping. He had some ideas that might help, but these kind of solutions could take time. Time we might not have. He added to himself.
His head still throbbed a bit, a painful reminder of his unfortunate accident the evening before. But as much as his head throbbed his pride was worse. How could a simple fall knock me out for so long? He shook his head at himself. Then to make matters worse, since her hands were now too big to dial cell phones, he was the one forced to call Sarah. Though he’d never admit it to Kirsten, he HATED the doctor. She always had a nobler than thou, “I’m smarter-than-you-and-I-know-it” attitude. It probably had something to do with her shorter stature. Standing at only 5’3, she probably had to act tough to keep bullies at bay all her life. Add to that her messy brunette hair and red squared glasses, he guessed she probably had to have had it rough growing up. Still doesn’t give her the excuse…
His thoughts were interrupted by a car horn. A shiny, yellow Dodge Dart approached and slowed to a stop not two feet in front of him. Looks like someone bought a new car, he noted. A few weeks ago she was merely driving an old, beat up Kia. Business must be good. He shook his head sadly and waved.
As she climbed out he also noted she was decked out in her full typical physician’s gear. She had also brought some items they had asked for: yard sticks, Kirsten’s cell phone, his laptop, and her medical kit. All held neatly with in her large, leather doctor’s bag she carried with her.
“This is some hodge-podge laundry you had me bring,” she sneered. “You owe me big time, by the way.”
“Yes I know.” He said angrily. One thing about Sarah, she always preferred favors over money when it came to providing her so-called “acts of kindness”. “Don’t rub it in. Besides, you don’t know just HOW big this situation is.”
She arched her eyebrow. “Curiosity arousal not with-standing, this is still highly unusual. I shouldn’t be here.” She explained. “Ethical standard aside, do you have any idea what they’re saying about you two?”
His stomach just felt like it was decked, hard. “No, what are-?”
She cut him off. “They’re saying she turned into some kind of freak, took you hostage, and is about to go on a rampage.” She nodded knowingly. “Social media has gone haywire. This morning’s news was all about the supposed ‘giant woman’. What the hell is really going on here, Greg? Is this a hoax?” Her eyes narrowed suspiciously.
He sighed. Ten o’clock in the morning and already this was turning into a bad day.
“No, follow me.” He waved her in.
Still expecting the “April Fools!” moment, she hesitantly followed. Greg had no idea how she would react to Kirsten’s new state, but he wasn’t surprised she already knew. Thanks to social media and modern news reporting, it was hard to keep secrets these days.
I’m surprised the cops haven’t thought about this place already. He mused. The good thing was that they discovered these caves many years ago, so digging that far into their past might take time. Time we desperately need. He knew that had to get as far ahead of this situation as possible. He stopped and turned around to look Sarah.
“Look, Sarah-“
“Dr. Johnson, if you don’t mind.” She sneered superiorly at him. “I happen to have a PHD.”
“Good for you, SARAH.” He said purposefully. “What you are about to see is, well, shocking to say the least. You think you know what’s going on, but it won’t really hit you until you see her.”
She just stood there, glaring at him like he was inferior. He sighed after he got no response at continued their trek deeper into the cave. Finally, they reached their destination. Looking straight a head, half of the room was more cave. But to the left you could clearly see water pouring out of the ceiling, a steady water fall constantly filling the pool of water below. Behind it was a wall of solid rock. But behind THAT wall was more cave space.
It was a good place to hide if you wanted to be alone. Unless you walked to the back, you couldn’t tell something, or someone, was sitting there and sobbing. In this case, it was Kirsten. His heart ached for her. Greg could hear her, and clearly so did the doctor. She was frozen in place at the sound of how loud the sobbing appeared.
“Kirsten?” He called. “Your other best friend is here.”
“Sarah?” Kirsten’s voice boomed.
For once in her life, Sarah had nothing to say. No smart ass remarks, no degrading sneers or looks. She just stood there. Then, cautiously…
“Kirsten?”
The giantess stopped sobbing. BOOM! BOOM! They heard her stand up. Sarah couldn’t believe what she just heard. She stepped back in shock. Greg was enjoying every minute of it.
“Hey, Sarah.” A depressed booming voice said.
The doctor’s breath rushed out of her. Right before her eyes a towering version of her best friend revealed herself from behind the wall. She stood there, watching her with aw and an open mouth.
“Told ya so.” Greg said, grinning.
Kirsten shot him a warning glance that clearly said ‘not now’. “Can you help me, Sarah? Please. I can’t stand being a freak.”
She closed her mouth and shook her head. “Wow. Just…wow. Ok. Clearly not a hoax. Which means…” She shoved Greg towards the door lightly. “Out. Out, out, out.”
“What? Why-”
“Because I’m already in enough ethical trouble as is. I shouldn’t even BE here, Greg. I can examine her, but if I do so it’ll have to be alone to ease my conscience.”
“Then what am I supposed to do?” He protested. “You guys can be at it for hours for all I know.”
She knelt down and rummaged through her black leather case. “Here,” she said, handing him three business cards.
“What are those?” Kirsten asked curiously.
“Lawyers.” Greg explained. “I told her we need to get as far ahead on this situation as possible. I told her to put me in contact with a state, federal, and financial lawyer. Then If we go to the cops and surrender ourselves we can be assured of our rights, yours especially.” He nodded as his titanic girlfriend.
“You mean if YOU surrender yourself.” Sarah said pointedly. “Call these guys and have as many of them as you can meet you at the nearest local station. Let them know first and foremost that you are NOT a hostage.”
“Duh.” Greg said, nodding. “Fine. I’ll be on my way. Kirsten?”
She smiled down at him as affectionately as she could. She was genuinely impressed. While she was panicking and feeling sorry for herself, his big brain was already being put to work. “I’ll be fine, sweetie. Go. Talk to the cops. Some girl time will do me good anyways.”
“Ok.” Greg replied. He reached for his cell phone. He still couldn’t believe in all the madness that just happened the evening before that it was still intact and undamaged.
As he departed, Sarah grabbed a yardstick from her pack. “Ok, girl. Let’s get to work.” She said bracing herself. “This is going to take a while…”
