I don't see a lot of desperation here. She is making a cauldron with a snake, an octopus, and a fish in it. Some would call that dinner.

And she sips it and becomes young and pretty again.

Not seeing a downside for any of this, even ethically (Putting aside the death of the animals, it's no worse than a bacon sandwich).
