I apologize if I'm telling you something you may already know, but just friendly advice....
Alcohol based paint is best for what you are doing, it's resistant to water/sweat. Water based airbrush paint will smudge very easily. If you want to try a cheaper alternative, acrylic liquid paint (they come in dropper bottles and can be found in most craft stores) works great but you risk clogging your airbrush gun.
Also shifting the needle back will widen the spray radius to help with coverage and always use a sweeping motion or outward circular motions.
