While technically the gray goop self-replicating nano-machines outcome is more plausible, a borg-type cyber "infection" via nanomachines is somewhat plausible as a post-singularity option.
Vernor Vinge's "A Fire Upon the Deep" featured a "power" coming awake and invading a large portion of the galaxy - controlling people like thralls (no real physical change described for the most part that I recall) - the implication was something similar to nanomachine-type controls, but potentially something more low-tech/mental. (It's a great book either way).
