I'm also fully aware the scenario you outlined is more than likely, and it depresses me. But depression doesn't get you anywhere. So, I made a timid little suggestion on his twitter account, because why the hell not? If it doesn't make any difference, there's still no harm in trying.
BTW, you're making the mistake of confusing "realism" with pessimism. It's a common 21st century ailment, and frankly it needs to stop. It's astonishing how far self-proclaimed "realists" will go to make reality conform to their perception of it.
