In a far-flung future, on a distant world out on the Outer Rim of the Galaxy, twenty-four-year-old Silanus of House Saturninus is forced to watch in horror as his father and elder brother perish in a catastrophic military defeat at the hands of powerful enemies, and then finds himself compelled to go into hiding down on the planet's surface when traitorous contingents of his own palace guard turn on him and seek to capture him so that they can turn him over to the victorious conquerors.
