Movie Talk: Cabin in the Woods

I watched this last night on a whim (via Netflix Instant), and it is still an enjoyable film. I'm not even that big into horror movies, but the meta-nature of the plot is what made this watchable, for me. Most horror movies before had just been paint-by-numbers snuff/gore films, and that's not even counting the torture porn.

But the main reason I would ever watch Cabin in the Woods is for the third act, when everything hits the fan. And it's fun to try to point out what kind of monster they used, and what was used just because it would be hilarious (ie, the unicorn).

This film makes me want to see a remake of the Monster Squad from Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard if it meant we can see their take on the Universal monsters, and maybe some more added it for flavor.

What did you guys and gals think of this movie?

I liked it a lot, it was a very enjoyable watch.

Though I will always view the ending as a lost opportunity with the werewolf attack that didn't result in a female TF afterwards.

Re: Movie Talk: Cabin in the Woods

I thoroughly enjoyed it, and as you said it was fun to play "Guess the famous monster" there toward the end. Also earlier, when you could see them listed on the whiteboard.

I'm a big fan of the Evil Dead movies, and so I enjoyed the setup as well. My only issue with the film is the ending. I'm quite certain that most people, when faced with the choice "Kill this one guy who I'm kinda sorta friends with -or- fail to prevent the death of 7 billion people INCLUDING this one guy AND myself," would very likely make a different choice than the Final Girl did.

But otherwise, a pretty entertaining film.

I'm sure if I found out that I was part of some unending cycle of death in order to keep some ancient eldritch god at bay, I would throw in the pipe wrench to end it all.

Re: Movie Talk: Cabin in the Woods

I dunno, I look at it as a numbers game. Allow 5 people to die once every X amount of time to save 7 billion lives and prevent an eldritch abomination from arising? I couldn't have it on my conscience that I, personally, unleashed the apocalypse. *shrug* The human race as a whole isn't entirely worthless...
