An Idea - TNP: One Hell of an Empathy Belly?
Hello there,
Friends, many knowing my liking for "The Nutty Professor" franchise - both its esteemed linage and its own outstanding themes - a fun idea occurred. Indeed, maybe natural within the wider theme, but it only recently popped to me. Now, concisely speaking, the original concerns the 96' rendition in which the corpulent, but brilliant Professor Sherman Klump transforms into the rambunctious, but erratic Buddy Love - engendering a duality which colors the rest of the movie. But... what if the gist and theme of the movie was inverted? Indeed, not WL, but WG so to speak... Well... let's consider this for this revised version of the story - In this, Professor Love is suave, egocentric but brilliant. Making meager progress with his metabolic formula, his attempts to woo Carla (the love interest in the movie) ends with him being chastised for having no humility or empathy for others unlike him. Smarting, but determined, Love retires to his lab to test his formula - to soften his bruised ego and prove to Carla that he can indeed be open minded. The change results - a metabolic transformation in which Love gains a hefty, corpulent new form - indeed, gaining "one hell of an empathy belly!": the success of the night giving way, step by step, to a new, nascent nature which, after some early indulgences, becomes more at ease and inquiring. Indeed, Carla dating and revealing a certain affection for the new Professor in Sherman. Also, Sherman has a more dedicated, invested work ethic as the research continues. In turn, the slim, suave but bombastic Buddy is at once perplexed, but conflicted - his oversized, nerdy alter-ego gaining Carla's attention and intimacy, while also continuing to make strives in his research, and thus career... The duality proceeds from here as the outspoken professor is perplexed, but despite his intentions cannot seem to diet in keeping the pounds and nature of Sherman off, as ironic as that is... Apropos, there is of course a splendid comic potential, as in the original film, but changes and reversions, as we all know... Just a thought, and some mental toffee for the forum, as it might be. Thanks again, Alchemical Night. |
