Movie Talk: The Event Horrizon

What's this? A SECOND Movie Talk thread in one week?!

I was in a horror movie mood after watching Cabin in the Woods, so when I saw Event Horizon was also up on Netflix Instant, I jumped on it immediately as I never know when Netflix will take a movie out of rotation without warning.

This movie was...fucking terrifying, to me. Doubly so, because it's a space horror film. That being said, I don't think this movie holds up very well. My main gripe is the pacing, as it felt like the movie was on a slight fast-forward setting. Which is a shame, because Paul W.S. Anderson was clearly emulating older space and/or horror films. The more obvious ones being the Shining*, Alien and Hellraiser. Had this movie been a bit slower, I'd think it would have helped the horror factor, giving the sense of isolation and paranoia in some scenes.

*(The film was originally pitched as being the Shining in space.)

But with all of the said, Event Horizon still works for what it turned out to be. The cast did a good job, and Sam Neill was a really creepy antagonist near the end. And anything that questions what lies beyond the veil of what we perceive as the universe, and the fear of learning the answer, is what helps this movie, for me.

What did you guys and gals think of Event Horizon?

No 'the' in the title.

It's been a long time since I've seen this, but I remember it being pretty creepy.

This girl I knew was convinced that this movie was a serious reason never to explore outer space.

There were cut scenes that would have slowed the film down but producers cut them early on for budget reasons and only two survived as VHS copies only without effects and no audio.

I still love this movie, but yeah, it can feel a bit rushed, but it scared the shit out of me when I first saw it in theaters.

Liberate tutemet ex inferis.

A very effective horror movie. The bit where they watch the Captain's Log is...memorable. And it's possibly one of the only times that "We're leaving" has been such a great line.

Sam Neill was creepy as fuck at the end. A little disconcerting given how much I enjoyed Jurassic Park.

I just watched this movie again last night such a cool movie. I loved the haunted aspect of the ship and how it came back on its own on 7 years later, sad a sacrifice had to be made tho. The overall story was excellent and actually made sense in scientific terms, great movie!

Now I'm imagining an alternate version where the dinosaurs were created using otherworldly means instead of cloning. I think I'll call it, "Lovecraftian Park."

The movie was cut way too much but it's a truly scary movie. "What makes you think I'll miss?"

Yeah, out of context it doesn't mean a whole lot, in context . . . it's downright chilling.

And yes, Captain's Log scene. Very memorable.

From what I've heard the entire original cut survives on VHS. It's be super cool if that could get released one day; Event Horizon is one of the few films that actually deserves the Cult Classic title.

And if you really want to see Sam Neill go crazy in a horror movie you should see Possession. The european cut, if possible.

Doesn't that mean they'd all eventually turn into the things from In the Mouth of Madness?
