About developing new kinks/fetishes.

Somewhat recently, I've found that certain fetishes I've seen around The Process (and other places) that I once found off-putting are beginning to appeal to me. Do you suppose it's more to do with getting older, becoming more open-minded, being exposed to it through here, or some combination of the three?

If by 'open-minded' you're meaning 'bored and need something new all together', then I'd see that being a plausible reason.

Example:

TG and simple DTG used to be really kinky for my co-author's and my RP's but then we needed to try different variations on the fetishes. Guy-turns-to-girl may be a staple for many, but for us we gradually needed to find less common (or just new all together) forms of gender-bending. So again, it's kind of a jaded and bored thing with us. On a funny note, last year my co-author realized she might be a closet-fujioshi.

I've gotten more into S&M thanks to reading a little of 'Nana to Kaoru' and 'Demon Candy Parallel', so the increased-exposure thing works as a plausible explanation if that got you into something new. Even outside of fetishes that's true in lots of things people take interests in. Radio disc-jockeys are bored out of their minds playing a recent hit song by the time it REALLY resonates with the public and sometimes it takes more than mere pilot episode to get people finally interested in a series on TV.

A long time ago...

I used to be exclusively into BE.

Then a couple of guys started incorporating GTS in their BE stories and art.

One artist in particular, I forget their name, started drawing SW material. The stories were kind of violent, but I started to like that too.

I befriended a guy at a comic book convention (basically just because we were the only two people besides Sergio Aragones smoking outside and spoke English) who told me about his FTP site and this TG stuff I didn't understand at the time. That too turned out to be a good experience.

Anthropomorphic stuff had to grow on me, but I liked stories and art that had surprised expressions on the people who were transformed.

I even like AR to a certain point. I still don't get the appeal of AR to children or children AP suddenly, but I'm not judging.

Did I leave anything out? Anyways, I just tried to find something I liked in all the popular categories.

Oh, who else does violent SW? I don't really like the violent stuff, but I bet I don't know the artist if he's violent Sw. I doubt it's toyogub.

Well, that's probably not me, then. I'm not even remotely bored of my favorites, SW and GTS, and doubt I will be for quite some time. ^_^

This seems like the more likely explanation, now I come to think about it. I got into GTS thanks to Darryl Hannah's growth scene in AotFFW, then very quickly found I liked SW as well. It's very likely that just coming here on a regular basis eventually exposed me to enough "other" things that something was bound to catch my eye, lol.

Like you, I don't really get the AR/AP stuff that involves actual children. Old person to young adult, maybe late teens, that I'm cool with, but I don't get the much younger ranges. Still, to each their own...

Part of it might be association/transference. You like X, you often see X alongside Y, so you develop an emotional response to Y.

It happens in other places, too. For example, there's songs that I absolutely hate, not because they're bad in any way, but because I associate them with personal tragedies.

(Some people have suggested this is the origin of many paraphilias. I have no idea if the psychological research bears this out.)
