Hi there,

In the first, as this may take some explanation, I will have to indicate, loudly and distinctly, that this post includes SPOILERS for the "Avatar: The Last Airbender" franchise - specifically the last instalment of its comic book successor series "Avatar: TLA - The Search". Please read on if you want, though consider yourself forewarned.

As some familiar with the "Avatar" series, especially its first incarnation (no pun intended) in "The Last Airbender", will note that a lingering mystery was the ultimate fate of Prince Zuko's mother; the enigmatic Ursa who disappeared before the start of the story proper. In the successor to the series continuity, "Avatar: TLA - The Search", we discover the fate of this mysterious character.

In essence, Ursa, escaping back to her home in rejection of her seemingly royal station, seeks to take up the lingering threads of her old life. Through the efforts of her old lover, she entreats an entity called "The Mother of Faces" - seemingly an ancient divinity who has a hand in shaping faces, and identities too.

Through this, the beleaguered Ursa receives a new face in the form of a spectral mask; the new face closing about her head and then moulded by the entity before emerging, dazed and confused, as her new self; a new persona, loving but ordinary, called "Noriko".

As the story progresses, Noriko is offered the chance to restore her identity as Ursa, and she accepts, though this unmasking is not seen by the reader, but heavily implied. The restored Ursa soon returns to resolve lingering issues with the main characters.
