To do ripped clothes I generally either make a bunch of custom transparency maps or just do it in post. I typically do the later now as it's usually less work.

The background is a generic prop (hoping to have better environmental props as time passes).

Exactly. You could just drop some boulders on it I suppose to try and cover up the leaves.

Foliage works too! It's my go-to solution for low rez ground textures. Like here, for example: http://fav.me/d9o0fy7
