Skiff, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I did considered them and no, you have not offended me. I have experience this before. Yeah, my characters aren't so original by other people's view but again I did put so much work into them. I did tried to change them. Some time ago, a few people who post at the forum for Lightfoot's site did criticize my characters. That's during the time I entered Lightfoot's comic contest. Their thoughts on them were close as yours. I did a few minor changes like my main character's name and Matt Zenn (A.K.A Very_Zenn of the BEA) drew our entry.
It did won the contest but people still think it should be more original. Because of that, I took that path of making my series more original. Matt, WLP's Kris Overstreet, and myself had a consultation about it and made suggestions on what should we do. We changed the whole series, from the concept of the story and character designs to changing the gender of the main character. Once we started on it, we couldn't make it work for obvious reasons like not having enough free time to work on it. But the one reason that hit me really hard is the familiarity. From the changes we made, its like its not my own series anymore. I tried going over and over on the changes but I cna't seem to come up anything. This is all because of the needs of the people that might read the series. We decided to forfeit our place in the contest and cancel the series and let the second place winner to take our place. Since then, I thought I would never make a comic or even write a story again. This whole thing started when me and my twin brother tell stories to each other about ourselves, mostly on what we dreamed about and how we see oruselves in the Aniverse. I really got into storytelling but never thought of writing it. That's when I realize what's most important is what I think about my characters and stories, not what other people think. It is my work and if I am happy with it then I shouldn't let myself do what other people suggest me to do with it. I don't expect it to make it for business. I created my characters, requested pics and write strories about them as a way of pleasure, spend my time, and share it to my friends and people of the themes that I'm into. Since then, I kept my characters just the way the are and I had no toruble writing stories about them. Again, Skiff, thank you for sharing your thoughts on my characters, I don't mean to offend you or anything. All I'm saying is that I am not planning to change my characters anytime soon becuase I work so hard into them and keeping them just the way they are. Thank you for your time. |

Well, I read and downloaded the comic Mammabliss did for you. Personally, I thought it was a cute story, and of course Mammabliss did her usual bang-up job on the art.
As to the characters, I gotta say, you got Fred Perry to do some of the art, and that in itself kicks ass. Fred Perry is old school, always loved his stuff and I've colorized a number of his stories (which is saying something I'll usually only take the time to colorize something if I really like it so much I just have to see it in color.) Yes, there are comparisons I'm sure can be drawn between your characters and some of others out there, but you know what, I can find a simularity between just about every character I've ever come across with another existing one. Doesan't neccesarilly speak to a lack of creativity, because the person who made the character might never have heard of what I'm thinking of. As to the slave/sexified bimbo thingy, I don't know. From what I saw there's alot of sex and playfullness to the characters in general, but that does not mean there's not more too them then that. People are versital depending on there mood, so without reading an actual story it's hard for me to determine based on a few panels. Anothere thing to consider is what you're going for here, what's your vision for your characters and stories? As more work get's out there, and depeding on who you work with, people will begin to form certian general associations. I'll give you three examples: Mammabliss: Cute, playfull stories and artwork. Fun type of stuff. GammaRay: Outragious situations, but with a realism and development to her character's reactions to the situations and transformations they find themselves that makes them three dimensional and the stories that much more intresting. Skiff: Well developed charactizations, and storylines. A grittyness combined though with a certian often ironic wittyness where characterzations are concerned that helps the flow of the story tremendously without compromising the intrity of the peices. I love all three by the way. All and all, I think there's some nice potential here. Stay true to your vision, and your work, and good luck. Keep us posted. |

It has been a long time but I finally updated my blog. Make things short, I've been feeling depressed and my computer's monitor is on the fritz. But I made sure I make this update worthwhile. This update shows pics by Lordcoyote, The-Z, and Dutch. Best of all, two of those artists did some comic trips and a full short comic. Enjoy!

Hmm... I thought there would be some comments on the new stuff I posted, especially the short comic from Dutch. If anyone trying to look for the address, its at the first page of this thread. Oh well, I guess I'll leave it here then:

Good stuff, really like the artwork.
I remember that contest on Lightfoot's sight, and I remember the only real problem I had with your storyline was that it was almost essentially the plot for Ranma 1/2. But now that you've tweaked the characters and situations around, it does work better. Except for the fact that Grape is still almost a carbon copy of Shampoo. You've changed her a lot from where she started at, but (and this is my stupid opinion and you don't have to listen to me, I can't even draw so who am I to talk) I would like to see her get away from that in some way. *shrugs* Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, and should just shut-up and enjoy the excellent artwork. Yeah I like that idea. Sean

Characters always fall into stereotypes and archetypes anyway. What makes them unique is what you do with them, their personality and how they communicate. Essentially there are only a certain number of stories out there (and i believe it can be argued there are only seven true stories) and anything else is what you put inbetween the main plot and roles. Good stories tend to have messages or at least make a comment on life, normally contemporary. We use stories as tools to educate as well as entertain, and there normally needs to be some sort of balance.
Or else you just dick around for fun. That works for me too. |
