Even if something is on DVD, I simply record from the DVD player to video tape and then transfer and convert. It's fun, for home movies and other stuff, such as making clips and montages.
There's no need to do that. In fact, you'll have a much much better quality video if you rip the dvd. There's plenty of tutorials on how to do this, you just need to google for 'em.
