It's just easier for me to link this here, another EC, this time from Date-A-Live. The trigger is seeing a loved one hurt and relying on a dark spirit/power within. It also looks like it will play a part in the next season. It's undone by a kiss though not too long after.

I just finished the first season of the anime for Date-A-Live. Good stuff.

As for Kotori.... ehhh, its kind of an EC and kind of homocidal maniac mixed together. Anyway, looking forward to the second season and more of Kurumi.

So I commissioned Apocallisti to give Lumina from Lightning Returns a slightly different backstory, which now involves an odd combination of crystallis-based conversion and Godzilla.

I'm not sure which one of his drafts to go with for the "aftermath" pic, though. I'm probably leaning toward the seated version.

What's Lumina's 'official' backstory, anyway? I haven't been paying much attention to Lightning Returns until a week ago, when a gameplay demo made me want to give it a chance.

She's a clone/reincarnation/something who's supposed to be all mysterious and "morally ambiguous" even though she does blatantly evil things like taunting Lightning in Riddler lingo and spawning random monsters to fight her. And, uh, Lightning somehow doesn't recognize her. Like everything else in that game, it's really left field and fanfic-y.

Lightning Returns is pretty much the developers just not giving a shit and doing whatever the fuck they want. The game takes place 500 years in the future even though everyone is the same age and Hope actually looks younger than his XII-2 appearance, it has a super grimdark doomsday plot that has nothing to do with anything and pretty much invalidates the entire first two games Mass Effect-style, and Serah appears out of nowhere doing her best Misa Amane impression. I kind of made a bet to myself that I could come up with a different original story that was batshit crazy but still let me say "Well, it's only as dumb as the actual game." My solution was Space Godzilla.

I'm actually reviewing the first 2 games and so far I want to beat the dev team to death with a ball peen hammer.

I like how the main source of the drama in this universe involves mechanical sentient cyborg god-things that have no rhyme or reason for existing and whose only motivation is "Do what I say or I'll turn you into crystals (and if you do what I say I'll turn you into crystals anyway)."

Not sure if this will clarify anything, but there are some points I'd like to add to:

- In Serah's story, we learn that she inherited the very same power (or curse) that Yeul, the Seeress, had: to see the future (which she does a few times in the story), but each time reduces her lifespan drastically.
- At the end of the second game, Serah and Noel meet a Chaos-corrupted Yeul, who tells them NOT to go after Yeul. However, when they do, and Caius dies (either by Noel killing him or by him forcing Noel's sword), it destroys Etro's heart and unleashes the Chaos that Caius wanted to let loose on all time to begin with. This ends up corrupting time and space (along with the new Cocoon named 'Bhunivelze' - after the one who created the Fal'Cie), along with all versions of Yeul.
- In the DLC, after Lightning battles Caius, she sees the corrupted Yeuls 'capture' Serah's dead body, telling her that Serah is one of them. After the Chaos captures Lightning, Serah's spirit frees her and gives her parting words.

The way I see it, Lumina is basically the new form of the Seeress, still corrupted by Chaos and, since time has been completely shattered by the Chaos, taunts Lightning and tells of the end, as she sees that there is no future left beyond the 13 days.

Personally, I don't think the story is that messed-up if you know all of the details. You just need to slow down and read the story bits to get all the information.
