Re: Female Werewolf needles in a haystack
Too bad this was never a real thing:
https://vimeo.com/6112119 Just a slight reversion at the end. Some blood and claws. Looks like an ad for a alternative film festival. And it's downloadable. For those with too much time on their hands, there is a behind the scenes. https://vimeo.com/6968902 |

Re: Female Werewolf needles in a haystack
Not really a content update, but I ran across this article today and thought I'd share as it's pertinent (but not really news to any of us).

Re: Female Werewolf needles in a haystack
The thing is, looking from it objectively, and not from a position in which we are getting anything "gratifying" out of it (not judging, just establishing two different mindsets), access to nudity is largely irrelevant to the question of why there aren't more female werewolves. Though the article started rambling a bit, the author hits on a good point: Women are largely viewed as more frail, weaker, or not as capable of being imposing as men. It's why the few ones we see are rarely in the position of being the alpha, or sole wolf, if they even get screen time at all.
For example, through the entire "Underworld" series, you see plenty of female vampires, but I believe there is only one scene in any of them that has female lycans, and they're background extras in one or two scenes. The vampires are portrayed as "lithe, sleek, and cat-like" in movement, traits which people tend to feel fit better for women, while the lycans are ferocious, hulking brutes, capable of tearing things apart. These traits are typically associated with males. It's shallow-minded, and disappointing, but go through the werewolf media out there, and look at the roles, and portrayals of the women in that media. That is the point the author was trying to convey. The exceptions to this trend (Ginger in "Ginger Snaps", Marsha Quist in "The Howling", etc) are awesome to see, but too few and too far between. As far as nudity goes, it is part of it, just not a major part. While it definitely affects a director's ability to get certain shots in a transformation scene when he/she has to avoid getting "naughty bits" on screen, it is totally possible to do a transformation without needing nudity. Movies like "Beast of Bray Road", "Little Dead Riding Hood", "Ginger Snaps", and "AAWP" and TV shows like "Bitten", "Angel", "Hemlock Grove" and "Sanctuary" all manage to do so. Now, not all of those examples ended up being great transformations. In my opinion, though, it has more to do with potential technical proficiency or budget limitations than it does with "Welp, I can't get her tits in the picture, time to mail it in". Even in a movie like "Blood Redd", while they establish that the character has disrobed, they never show anything more than her head and feet, and it doesn't detract from the transformation at all. The only issues I've ever had with that scene (not adding in grunts/sound of shifting bones of the character, and only focusing on the back/no shots of the face or feet changing) have nothing to do with whether or not I get to see her breasts. At the end of the day, producers, directors, writers, etc. just have to want to put these characters out there, in a prominent role. It's not exactly easy to bring to life, especially without cutting corners in the transformation scene in particular. However, it's been shown time and again that it's wholly possible if you put the effort in. It's past time to think outside the box, and put female characters in those spots to shine, and when they are put there, give them just as much attention and spotlight as you have for male characters in the past. Access to nudity won't hold anyone back if they don't let it. |
