The toughest detective in Bay City sighed as he
took his jacket off in the squad room and sat behind
his desk, his 45 year old, muscular body stretching
out his 6'5" frame to rest his legs on a waste
basket. Lon, his overweight, one time partner came by
and laughed as he dropped some paperwork on the desk.

"Say Frank, you really gonna push this statutory
rape charge against Tyrone Baggins?"

"Sure, why wouldn't I?"

"Well, for one thing, the so-called minor has
sucked off half the precinct!"

"Half the precinct are animals!" He replied in disgust.

"And Tyrone was only one month past his 18th
birthday!"

"Tough luck! One less gangbanger on the streets!"

"He's got no rap sheet!"

"Just a matter of time!" he growled. He dumped
his fat partner because he was too soft, too slow and always
second guessing him. Nobody wanted to be his partner and he
liked it that way!

"Speaking of time, there's an old lady in the waiting
room who wants some of your time!"

"Who is she, a witness?"

"Dunno, says she has info you need on this Baggins case!"

"Crap, is this a relative asking me to let him off?"

"She's black and old as the hills!"

"Fuck her!"

Lonnie leaned across his desk, grinning at his old
partner. "Why do you hate them coloreds, Frank?"

"You look at the streets and you ask me that?"

"I told you Baggus got no rap sheet!"

"So he hasn't been caught yet!" he shrugged.

"Your'e a hard man, Frank. Want me to send the old
lady in?"

"Tell her five minutes!"

Frank looked at the clock, 20 minutes till the end of his
shift. No overtime pay to work any more hours so he was
leaving on the dot! He gaped at the tiny, wrinkled, dark brown
woman limping to him; she had a rag tied around her white hair,
contrasting with her dark shiny skin.

He didn't offer her a chair and didn't stand up! She
stood by the desk, looking at him with a disconcerting glint
in her eyes, not anger or puzzlement, more like pity! He
gave her a hard look that didn't faze her a bit.

"Yes ma'am!"

"You be Mista Steele, Mista Frank Steele!" She said
it as a statement, not a question!

"Yes ma'am, can I help you?"

"You just lahk what ah be hearin. A big, ugly, strong
white man, ainchu? Everyone on the street and even de po-lice
be fearin you!" He shrugged, waiting her out.

"Ah sees yo! Yo strength is yo don't need nothin! Cain't be
bribed, got no wife, no fambly, no frens, not even a partner!"

"Look if this what you have to say, because...!"

"Mah great grand nephew Tyrone is facing jail time
cuz he had a weakness. But yo don know about weakness do you?"

'Okay we finally got down to it. "The law is clear, ma'am,
and so...!"'

"Mah name be Granny Tate!" she said with dignity making her
arthritic back straight for a second, "An ah practice de old gift!"

"Oh yeahh, riiiiight! Voodoo! That figures, go ahead granny;
Iv'e been cursed before!"

"Ah bleve it, but wan't done by me and wouldn't work nohow!
You don't need nothin a curse take away. But I gwine give you a gift!
Needin somethin! Needin de Black Root! Bet yo dint lahk dat

don know what needs are now, but yo will! Yo look in the mirror an see

into her purse and he tensed, ready to take away a gun or just shoot
her but he had to see the gun first!

"Ah give you a card of a pimp ah use fo dis curse. De pimp be
another relative gwine down the dark path. Ah suggest yo take it;
street be dangerous for an underage white girl with a need for dark
meat!"

He chuckled thinking she was crazy, but he didn't take it. She
arched an eyebrow and then she put the card on the edge of
his desk. Maybe he'd bust the pimp if he got a chance even
though he wasn't on the Vice Squad. She opened a little notebook
from her purse.

"Lessee see now, when be mah nephew's hearing scheduled?"
businesslike now, as if everything was settled.

"Just a minute, ma'am", he checked the court calendar!
"Thirty days!"

"Dat's fahn! Dat's how long yo gift last unless yo don't show
up an that'll drop the case against mah nephew!"

Frank laughed until tears formed in his eyes!
"He heh, No cure for senility in your little notebook there granny?
Don't you mean you'll make it permanent if I DON'T drop the case?"

She was already turning to walk away and he snorted,
shaking his head. 'Oh well, at least I got a couple laughs out of
it.' Finally, he saw the clock, reached over and picked up the card.
'Jumbo's Escorts! Off Times square! Figures!'
He figured he'd hand it to a Vice cop if he ever needed a favor.
