Yeah. Reminds me of the whole gender debacle for the new sandbox Zelda game. He seems to be a teenager instead of the usual... er... older teenager in that one.

We don't know what her role in the story is going to be yet. She's not a replacement, so she's either another "time displaced Link" like the Wind Waker and Child Links, or still his sister.

I haven't seen the source, but I've seen something something grew up in a small cucco-farming village thrown around all over, so that might be it. I don't think she's actually supposed to be a female Link. Concept-wise, out of universe, obviously, but not in-universe.
