Looks like it's in Chinese, not Japanese, but I would say right to left.

Unless we are speaking of older published mangas in western countries when they used to flip them. But that is getting more and more rare these days.

At appears to be chinese to me as well, except for the sound effects, which are japanese katakana. So it is probably a japanese comic that was translated to chinese.

The majority is Chinese, that much is true.

But it looks like a Hong Kong import. Cantonese intonation.

"Pills of these are of the heavenly sent purpose!"

The sound effects are still Katakana, but they translate well into cantonese. It's not uncommon for some words to transfer over well from two different languages.

Instead of a boing or poof, you get a fft or bom sound, for instance.
