Movie Talk: Iron Sky

Here's an idea that I'm "borrowing" from SourceFed and Film Sack, a YouTube channel and podcast, respectively. Just a spoiler-filled discussion about random movies that are currently streaming on Netflix (provided you have it (sorry if you don't)). Also, I don't really venture in the General Discussion sub-forum often, so I figured this could be a way to do so. And, depending on how many members, here, can get access to the movies in question through the aforementioned service, we can possibly make it a weekly thing(?).

Anyway, Iron Sky:

This was one of those films I chose to watch on a whim. Going into it, I didn't know much else about it, and the premise seemed like it would make for a stupidly fun movie... And yet, I was bored by the movie. I get the impression that the movie tries too hard to be a satire. And most of the jokes came off as being very hamfisted, rather than tongue in cheek. The only positive thing I can say about the movie is how well the CGI and special effects are. Especially when the Nazi's doomsday ship appears near the end, and how detailed the thing looked.

Re: Movie Talk: Iron Sky

Amen, JBird.

Iron Sky was one of those movies I wanted, truly wanted to LOVE. Much like the attempt at Lost in Space. However...in both cases I sat there waiting for the "EPIC".

IMHO, the folks who made Iron Sky tried too hard too soften things for the public. I liked the Palin wannabe but, the whole racial aspect was tired and not even in keeping with many of the actual Nazi ideas. Google "Black Nazis of WW2" sometime. *shrug* It came off as preachy and worst of all, remarkably predictable. I do think that the creators of the movie felt their own Govt. Enforcers breathing down their necks as, any references to Nazis in a great deal of Europe, let alone Finland and Germany, is problematic at best. Just see how they had to make the most absurd edits to Hogan's Heroes, in order to broadcast it for the German television market.

It also really hurt that they put out so many teasers that never appeared in the final movie. I got the distinct impression that they felt the pressure to rush out the final cut for the sake of not being hunted down like rabid animals by both the financial backers and very eager fans.

All in all, it was such a wasted opportunity to make some real snickers and giggles with EPIC SPACE NAZIS!!! Shame really.

Re: Movie Talk: Iron Sky

I honestly wish the whole thing was played straight, like a summer blockbuster. At least then, for whatever was meant to be serious came off as hilariously bad.

I wanted to stop watching it, and go reread Wonder Woman: the Circle, which features Nazis versus gorillas. While not the main story, at least that is more fun in how it's executed.

I sat through this movie a few months back and yes, it did not live up to the expectations I had when I saw the teasers way back. There is not much I can say that has not been yet, but I would like to mention that I too enjoyed the special effects and the creative design to a lot of the nazi ships down to the costumes and space suits. I personally did not enjoy the comedy or the approach they took to the film, but I know a lot of people who did oddly enough. I also wish they played the film more straight.

Hey, at least we have the new wolfenstein coming up.

That Wolfenstein trailer bugs me because I can barely hear what BJ is saying over the Jimmy Hendricks and the factory noise. And it also reminds me that I need to finish Wolfenstein. I liked what I played, but I was renting the game, and I didn't want to keep it for too long.

Amen to both of you.

It was, for me, the exact opposite of Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter which, I expected to be full-bore fail but rather, turned out to be such enjoyable fun on so many levels.

Taking the absolutely absurd premise and, playing it in all seriousness, worked wonderfully, IMHO.

Had they done the same with Iron Sky, gone into the actual history and "science" of it all with the Glocke, SS Gen. Kammler and the like, they could have pulled it off. Instead, a stale morality play with a few, very few snickers such as the bit with North Korea.

It's probably because I've been rewatching Star Trek: the Next Generation, but that actor could have been a Ferengi in a human disguise for all I knew.

Armin?!! He would have made a decent Doctor. Kind of in the style of McCoy or Troughton.

I am just tired of the pretty boi bent that seems to have taken over the casting for the role. Dr. Who was never all that "sexy" as a rule until the new series.

Um... I was talking about Nick Dong-Sik, the actor who was playing the North Korean representative. Just the way he acted all smug while trying to convince the rest of the UN that NK was behind the invasion.

Ahhhh Got ya! But then N.Korea is a bad cartoon at its very best.

By the way, anyone else picking up on the rumors of SyFy taking a shot at a new Blake's 7? This could either be pure EPIC or, such a mess that I may have to resort to violence.

I honestly didn't know what that was until I remembered Linkara reviewed the comic on Atop the Fourth Wall. But, an English program being remade into an American SyFy show? Makes about as much sense as Elementary, from CBS, to me. Maybe they'll update a male character to be played by a female actress =P

How can you not know of the best BBC sci fi show made for less than most spend at the pub on a typical Weds? Props from the Dr. Who rubbish bins and costumes that looked like they were jacked from a traveling S&M carnival!!

Honestly, I do not see how they can do it. BBC Radio has given it a good stab with a decent cast but, replacing Paul Darrow is simply impossible. What made the show work was a brilliant cast that was backed up with amazing writers. Thinking what Syfy will do to it..*shudder*... The closest in spirit to Blake's 7 done by Yanks was Firefly and that...while amazing...was tossed after one damn season!!
