Doing a Second Life TF RP (or any one-on-one RP, really) works best if one of the people involved has their own private space. I have done ones in group spaces without problem (the owners set it up for that purpose), but you run the risk of having others walk in/overhear/want to get involved.
As for TF's, I've done a lot of mixing and matching, with poses for things like falling to all fours. I usually progress the TF's by switching one aspect of the avatar at a time. I haven't been on in a while, but if you happen to see Kailundra Felisimo (I think that's how I spelled it), that's me.
