This is actually not my first story on here. And, while that's the second time the question of the particulars has come up I must confess I'm not seeing the importance of conveying that information (nor have I any clue as to why myself). Maybe they shrink out of a physical manifestation of subservience? Maybe becoming vulnerable and tiny is a means of offering themselves to their lovers by saying "I trust you won't take advantage of this gift"? Maybe it's their lust or shame, literally, consuming them? Maybe it's because aliens? Who knows.

For me, personally, the microphilia fantasy has always been about control. As the woman loses it her lover gains it. If she surrenders it in a fit of lust and passion, then it's that much more epic. So if I had to pick a reason it would be that the shrinking happens as a means of the woman to offer herself to her lover by making herself vulnerable. I don't see a need to know the specifics of the world to enjoy the story. What's more important is that the characters in the story behave in a way that's consistent with that world. It's established very early on that these women shrink when turned on, and they accept that as reality. Also, Megan is well aware of Doreen's history and shows great concern when Doreen starts getting to small, further showing how well the characters inhabit the world.

For that reason, I think this short story is a success. Clear beginning, middle, end. Clear stakes and tension. Nicely done!
