Everything that happens in the first 1/3 of the 1st volume is extremely important for the first 5 volumes. It sets things up as a reason why he ends up the way he is and why he has a hard time trusting people. It also explains things for later why he's so willing to just dismiss his old classmates. It's kind of disappointing.
