Pokemon Starter Types

This came up in another thread, and I'm genuinely curious now.

For those of you who started playing Pokemon on the original Red / Blue cartridges, which was your starter cartridge and critter?

Heh, I can't remember that far back with much accuracy, but I know I had Blue version. As for starter, I probably chose Bulbasaur, since that was the one that would help you the most through the first three gyms (if I recall correctly). If not Bulbasaur, then it was probably Squirtle.

Squirtle...back in Middle School when Blue very first came out.

I still have the save, and shall always have it....until the battery gives out and it's lost forever T_T

Hrm, fascinating results thus far... anyone have any personal anecdotes that might skew the data one way or the other?

Curious about "subjective" results.

Re: Pokemon Starter Types

For me, what got me into the series was my still being new to JRPGs (and RPGs in general), and I was eager to try out Pokemon Red without knowing anything about it beforehand. My intro to games like that was Final Fantasy VII, and you can imagine my surprise/confusion when I discovered that Pokemon featured one-on-one battles, as oppose to a party of three. Still, I stuck with it, and enjoyed it from then on. Plus, the Charizard on the box looked bad-ass, and playing a Gameboy game on the Gameboy Color was mind-blowing to my ten-year old self.

Re: Pokemon Starter Types

I borrowed my friend's red version and played with charmander. When I got mine it was a blue version and I'm fairly sure it was bulbasaur.

Now when I replay me red version I tend to start with either bulbasaur and pick up vaporeon as my water type or start with squirtel and run without a grass type.

Regardless I always get myself a ninetales as my fire. Can't legitimately get a vulpix In red so I ditto exploit to get one. Ninetales is my fave. I will not play a game without her in it unless I get a friend to trade me her egg so I can hatch a vulpix thats mine.

I still have my Classic close by, fresh batteries and everything. Dunno what I did with my Color or Advance, but they're around here somewhere. The switch from monochrome to color on the same cart was an experience, to be sure.

The color isn't what blew my mind.

What blew my mind is that you can CHANGE IT!

ZOMG finding out that if you hold the D-Pad/start/select and I think A/B as well in various combinations would get you different color pallets to the game made is just that much more fun to boot up.

I never knew about that until later on.

Regardless of which version it is, I always pick fire for my starter and no matter how far I get I never, ever, ever field a grass-type.

Re: Pokemon Starter Types

I started with Bulbasaur in pokemon Red, though I think future runs had Squirtle and charmander once or twice.
In silver I used totadile or cyndaqul
I'm pretty sure I skipped gen 3 (though I did pick up emerald and I had the grass guy.)
I picked the turtle grass guy in diamond
and most recently I had the water and grass guys. Make me realize no love for the fire types.
Also you really can't get more badass that Blastoise and Charizard. Though Blaziken, Sceptile and Samouott kinda come close.
